Is the water filtration system independently lab-tested and certified by NSF and/or UL? Many companies offer water filter systems with filter cartridges made from "NSF approved materials" but then don't submit the complete water filter system for lab tests. These products are marketed with no laboratory testing for contaminant removal nor submitted for health department certifications. These water filtration systems are not certified by NSF or UL and may not provide adequate filtration, thus they cannot be legally sold in states such as California. Is the water filter system state certified and registered in California, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Colorado and Iowa? All of our water filters contain at least one solid activated carbon block replaceable filter, tested to filter 1.0 microns or finer . We won't use or sell filters with activated carbon in its' granular form, (GAC), without an additional solid carbon block filter. This is because the loose, porous structure of GAC allows "channeling" and soon loses its' filtering effectiveness and may also allow contamination and support bacterial growth. 4. Is there a replaceable filter, and is it easily changed? Again, all our product lines have replaceable solid carbon water filter cartridges designed for a reasonable and cautious term of usage before a filter change is needed. Would you really want to drink the 15,000th or 30,000th gallon from some of our competitors' disposable, non-replaceable water filters made solely from granular activated carbon? 5. Is installation difficult? Our countertop systems can be installed in less than 5 minutes and may require, at most, a pair of pliers. The importance of adding a Shower Filter: Numerous studies have shown that higher doses of Chlorine and dangerous volatile organic compounds (VOC's) are absorbed through the skin while bathing/showering in chlorinated water than are absorbed drinking the same water. The American Journal of Public Health, Vol.74, No. 5, reports that skin absorption contributes an average of 64% of the daily dose of dangerous compounds from chlorinated household water. Children face an even greater danger with up to 91% skin absorption of these compounds. Studies by the Center for Environmental Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh indicate that at normal shower temperatures, about 50% of the dissolved chloroform (A carcinogenic chlorinated volatile organic chemical) in municipally treated water escapes into the air . . . before the water even reaches the floor. The remaining chloroform is available from shower water for absorption through the skin. This results in an exposure exceeding that from the daily dose from drinking this water by 600%.
